A wealth of life experience and a passion for coaching
My relationship with coaching has evolved over many decades, from reaching out to anyone with a modicum of knowledge; to being mentored by generous business veterans while operating start-ups; to approaching legal clients from a holistic approach to better understand clients' bigger picture and actual needs; to dedicated one-on-one, client-specific coaching.
I have unwittingly developed my active listening skills out of my curiosity. The how and why of people’s lives is fascinating and diving in with well-reasoned questions can lead to a wealth of transformation. I have always loved talking to people to find out what drives them, scares them, and what they want to do when they grow up.
I landed in Boulder for undergrad in 1987 after I realized that a winter of cold snow on big mountains, low humidity, and sunlight beats the brutal weather and small hills of the Northeast. For a brief moment, I thought I could go back to New York and become a Manhattan lawyer and to start law school in NYC. Well before the end of my first year I came to the obvious realization that was not who I was and fled back to the Rockies to finish law school at the University of Denver.
After law school I represented landlords and helped developers in the burgeoning Denver real estate market. Property was cheap so I started buying duplexes and small apartment buildings, rehabbing and splitting them into condos. This led to starting the one of the first sustainable dry-cleaning chains which we operated, built and sold to a small private equity shop. A giant learning experience but one that nearly killed me.
In the past decade I’ve been general counsel for a Denver-based real estate developer; run business developer for law and accounting firms; consulted for growing companies; own and operate Quiver Killer, a small ski binding mounting system; and, a partner in a wearable tech company. Several buddies and I have Good Wood Club, a non-profit that brings the Denver business community together to raise money for children’s educational causes. I am also on the board of Friends of Colorado Avalanche Information Center and Friends of Berthoud Pass, both avalanche information and education non-profits.
I live to eat, drink, travel and ski with my wife, Deborah (Badger) Perry, and our old dogs but I am also passionate about bringing good people together to help them be the most passionate versions of themselves.
I was eager to leave Southern California and forge my own path and landed in Boulder for undergrad with little knowledge of Colorado. What I did discover was myself and the things in life that I am passionate about and drive me to keep growing.
After college, I moved back to LA to work for Eli Lilly and dove into big pharma. Eli Lilly paid for my MBA at the University of Denver. After a brief foray into medical device I joined Johnson & Johnson where I have been creating new positions, managing teams, and being immersed in the structure of a corporate juggernaut.
I have become a pro at understanding different personality types and skill sets, and how to maximize those people in their roles. I love the challenge of turning people’s perceived hurdles into a new mindset that takes them to a new level.
I am excited to take the lessons and skills learned from decades in well-oiled, corporate machines, integrating with my lifelong journey of self-exploration, and helping people quantify their passions and a path forward.
